I Left My Heart in…

…San Francisco.

Despite the accuracy of Mark Twain’s famous line about the chilly summers in San Francisco,  there is just something about that city that makes me catch my breath. And it’s just always hard to leave.

After a rainy, damp and, almost wintery morning, I found myself bidding a fond farewell as we drove through the hilly, bustling streets to our next destinations.

But first…

…a walk through the summer of love. Try explaining the significance of the Haight to a nine year old…

…Getting a view from above it all…

The de Young Museum

…And seeing the forest for the trees…

Golden Gate Park

And then it was time to buckle up, turn up the tunes and plug in the GPS.

On the way from point A to point B we found…

A PEZ museum! Who knew!? And the worlds largest Pez dispenser…

We asked Google maps where we should go next and guess what? We went to Google!

Google employees ride these all throughout the massive campus.

No inside tours or photos are allowed at Googleplex (I tried!), but we caught a glimpse of a tubular slide two stories hight, in the staff lounge area! Needless to say, this made an impression on The Kiddo.

We are tucked in for the night, after making our way to the beach to spend some time with friends, ready for tomorrow’s adventures.

Summer Bloggin’ Road Trip 2013!

Take_a_road_trip - header_2013)

Last summer, I had more fun than I ever anticipated taking a summer bloggin’ road trip all over the grand ol’ U.S. of A.  I met Kate of A Creative Cookie in Arizona, Paula at Stuff I Tell My Sister in Oklahoma, Becc of TrueBlog! in Louisiana, then headed north to Virginia to hang out with Gwen at The Bold Abode, and meet Mimi of  Waiting for the Karma Truck. I made my way as far north as New Hampshire and concluded my trip with Pam of Mercantile Muse.  It was a fabulous adventure and I learned so many great things, not only about those parts of the country, but also about my very gracious hosts!

So, I could not let this summer go by without another bloggin’ road trip! But, I am going to do things a little differently this year. Not so virtual and a lot more real. Well, for me at least.

This summer, I am really getting in my car and heading for the highway. I have the best traveling companion around; he doesn’t even mind my singing, and we love to jam to the same tunes.  The only downside? This guy is a total back-seat driver. Well, only because CA law requires that individuals under the age of 12 ride in the backseat and you guessed it, my side-kick for PaperKeeper’s Summer Bloggin’ Roadtrip 2013 is none other than The Kiddo.

We are taking it CA Dreamin’ style and you are all invited to ride along!  We’re taking the Triumph out on the open road again, the stereo and tires are all tuned up.

blogtrip 2013

We are ready to Rock and ready to Roll…zoom zoom

We shove off soon and will be updating you with our travel adventures along the way, mobile style. I will be posting from my phone and bringing you along for the ride virtually.  All we ask is that you bring good snacks [we LOVE cherry sours and Pringles!] and good tunes.

But, that’s not it…there is more fun to be had…

Sure, you can kick it in the back seat with The Kiddo, or ride shotgun with me, but I challenge you to play along with CA Dreamin’ Travel Trivia!  Along the way, questions will be posted and each question will be worth a certain number of points! The person who earns the most points, wins! Actual prizes! CA swag of course! The prizes will be items found along the way as we roll on down the highway.   When we get home, The Kiddo and I will review all the answers, and tally up the points and announce the winners! Yes, winners, plural.  You will be competing for first and second prize, and a random draw for a third prize among  those who jump in and play!  You know you want some CA swag…just go ahead and admit it now…

Buckle up, settle in and let’s hit the road!

So, pack  your virtual suitcase and if you want an easy peasy bonus entry in CA Dreamin’ Travel Trivia,  leave a comment with a song we should add to our RTSL:  Road Trip Song List! (3 pts!)

Cheerio mates, see you out on the open road!

Going Whichever Way the Wind Gon’ Go…Road Trip!

Road Trip – Stop 5:  Meet Virginia, again

In life, like any good road trip, sometimes you have to be open to surprises along the way and be willing to take side trips to find the hidden gems; be ready to go whichever way the wind blows. Since my bold visit with Gwen last week in southern Virginia, I decided to take it easy and take it slow, and my GBS [Global Blogging System] did a little re-routing for me so that I’d be sure and have the chance to stop and visit Mimi and her Karma Truck. I swear I saw it pass me by at least once or twice along this journey, to let me know good things were just up ahead.

Since my last stop, I’ve logged an easy breezy 170 miles…an easy day by all accounts { even my butt thanks me! } and I never even left the state of Virginia.

This stop along my road trip is unique; when my husband and I were first married, we moved to the DC/Northern VA area for a few years. It was a fantastic adventure for both of us and we have  the best memories of our time living here. [Just would have been nice to know Mimi at that point in time..sigh…] So, for me, I feel a little like I’ve come back to a little bit of home. When we arrived in DC, we had gotten married the week before, packed our stuff, honeymooned on the coast of CA [we thought we’d imprint it upon our brains] and then flew east. Within one week I changed my name, left my job and there we were in a new state, new town, new name, new address, new license places and no job…I was the perfect candidate for the Federal Witness Protection program!

I digress…those stories are for another day, today it’s all about meeting up with Mimi and getting to spend a day getting to know each other a bit. I connected with Mimi in that way only a blog can do…I read a comment she left on my friend Paula’s blog {Stuff I Tell My Sister} and the name Waiting for the Karma Truck just about ran me over. There are a couple of folks I have been waiting for the Karma Truck to make a special delivery to [I know, I know, not so nice, and not Mimi’s intention, I know … ] but my interest was piqued!

So off I went, and upon my first visit, I was hooked; it was her post on what she might tell a younger version of herself. It got me thinking about that and I left my own comment and hinted at doing a post on that and linking back to her…well, that remains to be seen. I’ll get it done Mimi…promise.

In the time since, it’s been such an unexpected surprise to find not only her gentle wisdom, gracefully thought provoking reflections that bolster our spirits, but connect in friendship. I am quickly learning that so many of us talk about how surprised we are at the discovery that real, human, soul-filled and ready-to-connect folks are behind our blogs;  this ‘road trip’ is inspired by that very notion; the idea of connecting beyond the keyboard.

Just to recap, in case anyone just jumped in, my summer bloggin’ road trip is all about honoring the connections we find and make through our blogs. The way this virtual visit works is  – I asked Mimi some  questions I would probably ask her if we really got to meet in person, sitting down together, hanging out for the day  so we could get to get to know each other a little bit better.

So, I have rolled into town and pull up to Mimi’s house, only to be greeted like this

and this

Shh…don’t tell Mimi, but I might not leave at the end of the day…

So let’s go…we got LOTS to talk about [you might want to grab a beverage of your liking…]

Since this is a bloggin’ road trip, we have to talk about blogging, of course. Tell me about when you got started in blogging – What was it that got you started?  Did you think about it for a long time, or did you just wake up one day and think, “I’m going to start a blog”?  //  I started blogging in January of this year.  Having recently crossed the seven month mark, it’s been a fascinating, rewarding and occasionally frustrating exercise.  Initially I thought that WaitingfortheKarmaTruck would be more of a Dear Abby-type forum for people with questions about the workplace, along with some occasional posts about all the other stuff.  Needless to say, the blog quickly took on a life of its own!  I’m not sure if I could even describe what it is about at this point – an olio?  I write what comes to mind and hope that it resonates with others.  // I think I speak for all of us when I say, um, yeah, it does!

How long have you been blogging now, and what would you say has surprised you the most about it?  // I’m most surprised by the absolutely wonderful people that I have ‘met’ in this community – and my hunch is that in your travels, everyone will respond to this question with similar answers.   The support, humor, intelligent conversation, friendships – I wasn’t expecting any of that at all.  // I wasn’t either and am surprised most every day…and yes! Everyone so far on my road trip has made the same remark. It’s really something to stand back and admire, how we take the opportunity to share ourselves, and then the amazing response that we receive.

Everything has it’s challenges, are there things about being a blogger that just make you say, ugh?  Things you put off or just like less than the rest of it?  // I get frustrated when I feel like my mojo is anywhere other than here, and I can’t get my brain to eke out the simplest sentences about anything.  I have no illusions about my writing ability or lack thereof.  There is some real talent out there – people who will or already have been published, others who should be – and I’m not in that league.  However, I can usually string two thoughts together and those flat days feel just lousy.

What topic/topics do you enjoy blogging about the most?  // It seems that I trend towards discussions about mindfulness – taking ourselves away from our self-centeredness to considering our role in the larger picture.  Does that seem right to you?  If we were sitting here together, I guess I’d ask you what you think I blog about the most?  The easiest material for me is that which deals with management development, since that was such a huge part of my professional career.  It’s the least intimidating subject matter.  Is it the most I enjoy?  Hmm…I don’t know.  //  Yes! And I think you blog about matters of the heart, soul and humanity; and I am amazed how on so many days, it is something I’ve been mulling over and haven’t found the words yet, or something I needed to hear and didn’t even know it yet. And it’s always somehow wrapped in a hug.

I just rolled in – what are we going to do today?   //  We live about 25 miles outside of Washington DC  (as the crow flies – which always puzzles me because most of the crows around here seem to circle like hawks do and caw more than fly, but I’m just sayin…).  So I guess it begs the question – do you want to go downtown for a tour or do you want to stay closer to home?  We’d probably hang out here for a little while, have a swim and enjoy watching the twin baby deer that were born in the forest behind our house.  //  I think I will be more than content having a tour of your pool. 🙂Though still little, they like to follow their mom on legs like rickety twigs and take rests in the backyard.  We have lived here for 20 years and realize how lucky we are to be within commuting distance of DC (though it’s a long, stressful, trafficked drive which I did everyday until I retired) and yet still feel so removed from the frenetic activity associated with the District.  We have a ‘homey’ home – friends like to kick off their shoes and just hang awhile.  And Archie and Teddy usually expect a completely unreasonable amount of attention when anyone stops by.

C’mon, that’s just not fair! How can you resist those two, especially since I’ve had to leave my furkid at home. Let’s just not tell him about these two.
It will be better all around.

Later, we’ll go over to the Town Center and see which type of cuisine floats your boat today. Although hardly as exciting as downtown, there’s a wide range of dining options and some shops to wander into when we’re done.

I’d probably opt for Mon Ami Gabi – eating outside because the weather is perfect today, isn’t it?  And they have a great wine list 🙂  Of course, there’s a Barnes & Noble with Starbucks close by – so maybe we can stop there…please?  //  I was going to ask the same thing, yes, of course!

Even though it was an easier drive from VA to, well VA, I still want to grab a drink with you.   //  Ok, let’s go into Georgetown before you leave, so you can walk around this fun little part of our Nation’s Capitol.  The facades on most of the buildings have remained true to the period of its establishment, so it’s quaint and funky with loads of fun places and side streets to explore.  Will hit the Smithsonian and the Newseum next time you come by.

What question(s) do you have for me while we relax?  //  We’re going to go to Tony & Joe’s in the Washington Harbor for a drink before we head home.  Andy and I had our first (blind) date there. // I can’t tell you how excited I am we are going to Tony & Joes…when we lived in DC, we went there to meet some folks for a boat ride on the Potomac. It was a group we were to meet for the first time [blind date?] and we couldn’t find them [stood up?], so we waited by the bar with a beer. A storm rolled in within minutes [apparently they knew that…] and we grabbed a seat under the overhang, ordered another beer and watched the most specatular lightning storm over the water – we still talk about that like it was yesterday, have described it to our son and wish we could buy tickets to a replay of that show. We never met up with the group, never went for the boat ride, but got something much better in it’s place. I love that you did too.

We’re on the water, the breeze is gentle and a nice glass of Sancerre is definitely in order.  Besides, I’m hoping the wine will loosen your tongue for this is our time to talk about you…

What is your happiest memory to date?  //  The day I found out that I was pregnant with our son Ben.

Your  saddest?  // The day that I knew the end of my mother’s life was nearing; I remember telling my best friend, “this is the beginning of the end, and there is nothing I can do to stop it.”

Other than your family, what gives you the greatest joy?   // Serendipitous moments, witty banter, the sound of my camera shutter, putting words together in ways I hadn’t expected, the feeling of belonging, mountain air on a warm day while riding my bike, my son cracking up, dancing, hearing a song I love while driving with no real rush to get anywhere, alliteration, the ever elusive runner’s high, surprising someone with something I know they will love, our dog when we get home, my son and our dog, fast asleep and snuggled together, hearing my son sing along with the radio when we are driving together,  creative-innovative-inspired change/solutions/ideas.  And long chats with friends.

So,  I’m pretty hungry after a day of driving and I’ve had my fill of fast food and truck stop food. I  would loooove something home cooked; what would you fix for us to eat? // Back home, I’m making some chicken piccata, mushroom risotto, a green salad and some garlic bread.  I’ve sent you up to grab a shower and a nap before getting on the road.   Once a Jewish mother, always a Jewish mother…  // [ Shhh….she thinks I’m leaving after dinner….]

Before I get back on the road, I’m going to need a good cuppa cuppa to keep me awake for the next part of my drive….where would you take me for my java fix?   // I could send you to Starbucks, but I make a mean cappuccino with my Nespresso maker…Can I tempt you with one of Mimi’s marvels?  I promise you a yummy dessert with it… // Tempt me? Starwhats? Of course, tell you what, I will sit tight right here in your perfect sunroom while you make a Mimi’s marvel for me.

Tell me one surprising thing I would find out when meeting you for the first time?  //I don’t kow – big heart in a little body?  Autoimmune compromised but reluctant to talk about it?  Pretty happy most of the time.  Decent voice that I still exercise with a little alcohol to allay the nervousness?  That at the core, I’m pretty boring?  🙂  // I remember that came up in one your posts and it was highly protested, me among the crowd. But while I still disagree, I think I understand the notion, and to me that translates to someone real, ready to meet you where you are and fanfare is not required but silliness is always welcome. However, my guess is that when the fun and games get started, you are at the heart of it all. Am I close?

It’s been an awesome stop – I want to take a souvenir home to remember my visit with you  – what should I put in my trunk to take home?  // Souvenir?  Please take home the entire Presidential campaign – both sides I don’t care – most decisions are already made, and all that’s left is the ugliness.  Can you pack it up and take it with you with the understanding that if you head up to New Jersey, you can toss it in a toxic waste dump one you get there? // Ugh…I don’t want it either…can we pull a Thelma & Louise act and together throw the whole thing off the cliff and then drive off into the sunset? I will drop you off at home before I continue along on my journey. Or you could come with, you have a much better singing voice I am sure!

I’m heading out of the driveway – you toss me a CD  of your favorite tunes to listen to as I roll on down the highway – what is it and what’s your favorite song on it? //My dear wonderful friend Lori at DonnaandDiablo.wordpress.com has made me some terrific cds so I’d make you a blend…a little Sara Bareilles, Melody Gardot, Straight No Chaser, Shelby Lynne…Then I’d load up some James Taylor, Laura Nyro, Jack Johnson and Streisand…I may throw in the Doors “L.A. Woman’ in case your energy begins to wane, Maroon Five, Steve Wonder and Aretha.  // Perfect choices, those are all on my playlists on my iPod. Just the other night I downloaded this Melody Gardot song and not long ago saw Straight No Chaser in concert with several friends.

…Finding your way out on the open road…

…Going whichever way the wind gon’ go…

Is there anything else you want to say, I’m heading out, gotta hit the road again! // Where are you heading next?  What has your most memorable moment been so far?  Have you had your oil and other fluids checked before you leave?  And do you want to swing by on your way home?  🙂 // The most memorable moment so far, would have to be before I even left CA…when I wrote to each of you that I hoped to stop and ‘visit’.  I got the best response from each of you, such warm welcomes, excitement for the virtual trip idea and the willingness to play a little, get into it with your imaginations.  Thanks for making sure my car is ready to roll, and yes, I would love to swing by on my way home…I’ll call ya from the road!

Mimi,  I left a little something for you, it’s over by your mailbox, to say thank you, for the lovely welcome, the conversation, the warmth. Thank you so much for hosting my stop on my road trip and showing me such great hospitality. As I head out, I need to say goodbye to Archie and Teddy too

As I roll on down the highway, where am I headed next?

It will be my last stop of this road trip!

Here is your next hint:
the first potato  planted in the US was planted here and the first free public library in the United States was established here.
Mashed potatoes and books…sounds like a place for me!

Thanks for riding along, and until next time, safe travels of all kinds…

Go Boldly or Go Home…Road Trip!

Road Trip – Stop 4: Meet Virginia

Since I left Louisiana last week, my little Triumph and I have made some serious haul! 1,134 miles north, to be exact, up to sweet Virginia, trekking through 5 more states as I wandered along and it took days to get here. Today, I am stretching my legs and meeting up with Gwen, one bold girl, you will see.

I connected with Gwen in the early days of blogging and having a Facebook page and was immediately loving her bold, crazy self. She always had me in a fit of laughter, except when she had me reaching for the tissues with what she called her Friday Letters – a human, insightful look at life and the curveballs, celebrations and otherwise ordinary moments that all come our way everyday. She captured it all in her words and images and I was hooked. And then there was her honest, down to earth, humorous approach to living boldly and how can you resist an honest to goodness real [and often very funny] person? It was one of the early realizations that behind each gravatar and logo are these incredible, realand amazing individuals. Gwen has her blog, called This Bold Abode and a second site called This Bold Girl.

You never know who you will meet along the way, if you just joined the caravan, this summer bloggin’ road trip is all about honoring the connections we find and make through our blogs. The way this virtual visit works is – I asked Gwen some questions just as if I was really pulling up to her driveway and collapsing on her front porch!

But, she beat me to the punch { told ya, she’s bold like that } and she meets me on the porch and makes sure I feel welcome from the get go!

She gets the party started and says,

Hi! I’m Gwen from The Bold Abode

The Bold Abode

and am thrilled to be one of Bonnie’s Summer Bloggin’ road trip stops!

How great is that! Once I get the kinks out, from sitting in that darling little car, I ask her a few questions!

Since this is a bloggin’ road trip, we have to talk about blogging, of course. Tell me about when you got started in blogging – What was it that got you started? Did you think about it for a long time, or did you just wake up one day and think, “I’m going to start a blog”? //I started blogging just barely over a year ago. A friend of mine told me about the Nester, and from Day 1, I was HOOKED. Then, I thought, “hey! I could sooooo do this!”… I had no idea what all was involved and how much time it took or anything.

What would you say has surprised you the most about blogging? // What has surprised me most about blogging? Hmmm…. HOW MUCH TIME IT TAKES….But really? The amazing friendships I’ve made. I NEVER expected that blogging would be so interpersonal. It’s been a great way for an introvert like me to let down her hair and have some fun!  // I totally agree about the amazing and surprising friendships formed through blogging, but nuh-uh! No! You? An introvert? I never would have guessed that, you are always so friendly and easy to talk to, super approachable and well, kinda crazy. In a good way. I never would have guessed that, but I get it, I’m one too.  I just think you are the ‘hipper’ and ‘funner’  version.

peace-out

Everything has it’s challenges, are there things about being a blogger that just make you say, ugh? Things you put off or just like less than the rest of it? // I really love blogs and blogging, especially designing and building them on WordPress…but sometimes, I just get tired of showing everything I do…so I don’t… Sometimes, I get to feeling like a big, fat, self-absorbed ego-manic looking for attention. When I do, I pull it back and reassess. Take a break. Breathe a while.

I just rolled into your town…how are we going to spend the day?  And, you know I am going to want to stop somewhere for a drink // If you came to town, Bonnie, I’d take you to Rivermont Pizza… It’s amazing! The food is awesome and the atmosphere is totally relaxed… just like me…hahaha. I’d order a G&T, but the Pear Cider is awesome, too…   // Sounds perfect, I love Pear Cider, just had one a week or so ago. The pizza place looks perfect!

So, what do you want to ask me – I’ve been quizzing you! // While we’re sipping our cocktails, I’d want to know how in the bleepin’ heck you got to be so organized? Thanks to you for recommending Workflowy! I’m getting there! //  Oh that’s funny!  I can be super organized about some things, and have a bit of chaos going  on in some other corner. That’s the way I roll, but I really don’t like doing the same thing over and over, I get bored and always try to find a way to create a system or automate things that are repetitious, so I can move on to something where I can be creative, or do something new. So, when I found Workflowy, by a fluke, I loved how it keeps a list going, that I can add to, modify, access from anywhere online, and cross things off! Isn’t that the best part? I was glad when it worked for you.

So, I’m pretty hungry after a day of driving and I’ve had my fill of fast food and truck stop food. I would loooove something home cooked ; what would you fix for us to eat? //  Then, when we got home, and you got the munchies, I’d make you some Sweet Potato Fries,

sweet potato fries

or some Indoor Smores…YUM.

Indoor Smores

Yes ma’am. I love both of those; wll there be leftovers for the road?

Before I get back on the road, I’m going to need a good cuppa cuppa to keep me awake for the next part of my drive….where would you take me for my java fix? //When you git ta goin’, and need some coffee? I gots nuttin’… Alas, I’m NOT a coffee drinker… I love the smell, but it gives me a freakin’ headache! So sorry, my friend!  // No worries, I am sure I can find a Starbucks with my handy global blogging system :).

Tell me one surprising thing I would find out when meeting you for the first time? //  And when you go, you’ll be super-surprised to find out that I’m almost 6 feet tall…Yes. I’m an Amazon-woman… A She-Ra, if you will..  // No way…I love it! I am almost 6 feet tall also…some people have heart to hearts, but not us, we’d have some serious eye-to-eye conversations!

she-ra_princess_of_power_229_1280

At least…in my mind…

It’s been an awesome stop – I want to take a souvenir home to remember my visit with you – what should I put in my trunk to take home? //  I can’t let you leave without Virginia Diners Chocolate Covered Peanut Brittle!  // And you think that is going in my trunk and making it home? You’re a funny one, Gwen.

It’s the best thing in Virginia besides me…hahaha…

I’m heading out of the driveway – you toss me a CD of your favorite tunes to listen to as I roll on down the highway – what is it and what’s your favorite song on it? //  I hope you like the mix tape I made for you, too! It’s got some Weezer, some Mumford and Sons, some {gasp} Katy Perry, some FUN and some Muse. But I can’t help lovin’ I’m a Trouble Maker from Weezer’s Red Album… It’s my theme song.

Is there anything else you want to say, I’m heading out, gotta hit the road again! //  Thank you, Bonnie, for stopping by!  I hope your friends will visit me over at The Bold Abode!  Have fun on the rest of your trip, girl!!! Thanks again for having me!!!

I hope you take a minute to drop by and meet Gwen – you can find her at her blog, or one of her other favorite hangouts…

Or over at This Bold Girl!

This-Bold-Girl-Button

Gwen, I left you a little something to say thanks!

Thank you so much for hosting one of stops on my road trip and showing me such a great time!  It was great to ‘meet’ you and get to know you a little bit better. And glad to know we can look each other in the eye 😉

So, as I roll on down the highway, where am I headed next?

Here is your hint: it has it’s own National Performing Arts center, and was originally called called Ayr Hill.

Thanks for riding along, remember to be bold; and until next time, safe travels of all kinds…

Sweet Magnolia Down Under…Road Trip!

Road Trip – Stop 3: Louisiana or Bust!

Since I left Oklahoma last week, my little Triumph has logged another 456 miles –  I had to cut back through Texas, dodge a few more tumbleweeds but an easy drive all things compared. Today, I drop down into the south, to meet up with Becc, an ex-pat who hails from Australia and is living in Louisiana. Becc’s blog is TrueBlog! Life in Louisiana and all things Woolmerhof.

I first met Becc when she entered to win an item of mine that was part of a giveaway on another blog, back in the early spring. She tweeted about it and her excitement was so apparent that I found myself hoping as much as she was that she’d be the winner. It’s been a blogging friendship ever since, but even though she won the giveaway, I think I won too.  We chat on Twitter which led us to this thing we have for Internet  Cheese. If you have never had haloumi, it’s time that you join us in our obsession.  So, when I set out on this epic road trip, there was no choice but to make my way down to the bayous of Louisiana and have a visit with Becc.

With Becc I have my very own personal tutor in all things AU, an accomplice in all things candy, a fellow blogger and, well, the most important a friend. The other day my son asked me ‘you know where I really want to go?” I asked, where, of course.  His answer? “Australia!” Then he wanted to know if there are Carnivals in Australia. I told him I had no idea but that I would ask my friend from AU if they do. His eyes got big, “YOU have a friend from Australia??”  I just smiled and said, ‘yes, yes I do.’

Just to recap, in case anyone just jumped in, my summer bloggin’ road trip is all about honoring the connections we find and make through our blogs. The way this virtual visit works is  – I asked Becc some  questions I would likely ask her if we really got to meet in person, sitting down together at her favorite spot(s) in her hometown,  so we could get to get to know each other a little bit better.

Since this is a bloggin’ road trip, we have to talk about blogging, of course. Tell me about when you got started in blogging – What was it that got you started?  Did you think about it for a long time, or did you just wake up one day and think, “I’m going to start a blog”?  // We thought all along that we’d be spending 2012 and 2013 back in Darwin (that’s in the North of Australia waaaay up near Indonesia!) so it came as a huge surprise when we found out that we would actually be moving to Louisiana USA. Woah! Now woolmerhof and I by ourselves really aren’t that fun, but our son F had just turned one at the time and I thought a blog would be a good idea to keep everyone updated on how we were going, what we were seeing and of course, the differences between Australia and the United States from our perspective! A blog is just so much easier than sending emails all the time – plus people don’t feel they have to respond to a blog post like they do an email (and likewise with me replying!).

How long have you been blogging now, and what would you say has surprised you the most about blogging?  // We found out at the end of May 2011 that we would be moving that November, and my first post was September 13 2011. I never thought my ramblings would be interesting/funny enough to have readers apart from our friends and family. It always brings a smile to my face when I get a comment from a new reader and they enjoy what they read.

Everything has it’s challenges, are there things about being a blogger that just make you say, ugh?  Things you put off or just like less than the rest of it?  // I always feel pressure to write something interesting/witty often! There are days that I know we really haven’t done anything exciting for the past week, but I try super hard to write every few days. Particularly because I know so many people back home wait for blog posts and get a real kick out of reading them. I’m slowly finding ways to draw inspiration for a post, even if i’m not feeling that inspired. // I think what’s great is that the everyday things are what sometimes highlight the differences between life in the US and AU – you do a great job of sharing your observations about life here, what you find that you appreciate all the while sharing some really fun stuff that comes from home. That’s a great perspective!

What topic/topics do you enjoy blogging about the most?  //  I’ve always gotten really good feedback when I write about things that have happened to us. Usually a trip into the nearest town and conversing with some central Louisiana locals always brings for some good stories. If I had a dollar for every time someone had looked at us blankly or said “what!?” each time we spoke, or asked if Australia was as big as Texas (forehead slap.. it’s the same size as continental USA!) I’d be rich. Good to know someone’s amused by it, even when we have days that we’re not!  // That’s hilarious, people have really asked you if AU is as big as Texas? It just dawned on me that we should have a phone conversation at some point – as with most blogging, tweeting, texting, etc, we don’t hear each others’ voices, and so I don’t hear your accent.  In my mind, you sound just like me! So, what I want to know, do I sound just like you in your mind?! 🙂

I just rolled into your town…how are we going to spend the day?  // There aren’t many awesomely fantastic things in Leesville…it’s a little town with a big Walmart. But, how lucky you came during the first ever summer that crawfish are available! (a girl can dream can’t she!?) Crawfish are usually available Feb until End of May. We’ll head on over to J&T’s Crawfish Shack to get some mudbugs. They’re awesome little critters pulled out of the bayou and boiled in loads of cajun spices with corn and potatoes. Northerners often joke that they use them for fishing bait, but we love them – and we’re not even locals! Kinda like a cross between a prawn and a lobster we think. You’re a true cajun if you suck the juices from the head – we do not!  // I gotta be honest, you lost me at mudbugs! But, it’s a road trip, and I’m here to experience it all. We only get one spin around and I’d hate to look back and think I missed my chance with the mudbugs. But, is it ok if I keep my eyes closed?

Leesville Watermelon Stand is another summer staple. The watermelons are all home-grown from the guy’s own crop. Once the melons run out, that’s it – no trucking from interstate. They are some of the best melons I’ve ever had in my life and oh so cheap! This beauty  cost 5 bucks! // Now you’re talking, I am completely on board with the watermelons!

Leesville Donuts is opposite the watermelon stand  (are you sensing a theme here!?) and serves the best donuts hands down. Our friend is from Illinois and swears that her and her husband rate these donuts as the best they’ve ever tasted. The guy that owns it always greets us and asks if we want our usual – a croissant with melted cheese and an apple fritter. Perhaps we go there too often?  // I don’t see any harm in supporting the local businesses in your town!

Nichols  is a must see in Leesville too. Camo, hunting goods, homewares, toys as far as the eye can see! I once had a local guy abuse me in Nichols because he heard my accent and proceeded to call me a convict. The shopkeeper stood up for me though and apparently he was an “out of towner.” It has to be seen to be believed!

I should probably take you somewhere nice for dinner too – Wagon Masters Steakhouse is a great place to eat. Not fancy, just a good place to get great steaks. I love the fried pickles and I’m convinced their biscuits are the best in Louisiana. Grab your bucket of peanuts on the way in, chuck the shells on the floor and try not to eat too much before the starters come out! My pick – fried catfish and a loaded baked potato.

Even though it was an easier drive from OK to LA, I’d love to unwind  – what do you say we go grab a drink? Where do you take me and what’s your favorite summer time beverage?   //  I wouldn’t suggest frequenting any of the “establishments” in Leesville for a drink – let me assure you, The Pegasus Club isn’t as classy as it makes itself out to be, so we’ll head on back to my place for a Gin and Tonic (aka G&T) on the porch swing.. okay.. so it’s a swinging chair on our front lawn because we don’t actually have a porch. Why G&T you ask? We drank many a G&T when we lived in tropical Darwin. It’s cool and refreshing, and is also said to be good at repelling mosquitoes because of their aversion to juniper which is the main flavouring in Gin, and Quinine which is the definitive ingredient in tonic water. I’m not sure how true that is though because I always get bitten by mozzies. Don’t worry – I have lots of insect repellant!  // That sounds absolutely perfect; sitting on the swinging chair, sharing a drink with you in your own front yard. I am going to have to see if it works on CA mosquitoes, [I like mozzies better!] we have plenty of those here, and I’m willing to try anything to keep them away!

What question(s) do you have for me while we relax?  //  What country would you most like to visit, and what would your itinerary be?  // What a great question from a travel agent!  I love to travel, and the list of places I want to visit is a mile long.  I learned not too long ago that I have some ancestry connections to Scotland and England, so I think I might  make it a point to find my way there. I’d also love to revisit your country and see parts I missed last time, and I really want to experience places like Spain, Costa Rica, France and Norway.

So,  I’m pretty hungry after a day of driving and I’ve had my fill of fast food and truck stop food. I  would loooove something home cooked ; what would you fix for us to eat// Well, since we bought that gigantic watermelon back in Leesville, and it’s currently 105 degrees outside with 90% humidity, we’re going to have a watermelon and feta salad (goes well with G&Ts too!)

Before I get back on the road, I’m going to need a good cuppa cuppa to keep me awake for the next part of my drive….where would you take me for my java fix?   // As I mentioned, Leesville Donuts is a great place and what goes with Donuts..? Coffee! They serve Community Coffee which is a New Orleans brand and apart from Peets on the West Coast, it’s my favourite blend.

Tell me one surprising thing I would find out when meeting you for the first time?  //In my previous life before I was an Army wife and mum who moved every two years, I was a travel agent. I’d been to the US before among many other places, but I think it’s really cool to have the opportunity to live and travel in a different country. Living somewhere is so different to just visiting and I think we’re really getting a chance to experience the proper south while living here.

It’s been an awesome stop – I want to take a souvenir home to remember my visit with you  – what should I put in my trunk to take home?  // Have you noticed the fleur de lis’ everywhere? That’s because it’s the symbol of Louisiana! Plenty of french influence down here! You simply must take one with you (don’t worry, you’ll find them everywhere) as well as a box of Zatarain’s Jambalaya mix so you can make it when you get home.

I’m heading out of the driveway – you toss me a CD  of your favorite tunes to listen to as I roll on down the highway – what is it and what’s your favorite song on it? // Some Australians say this song should replace our National Anthem. It’s not a really boppy song – but it has great lyrics and explains some much of our history and what it means to be an Australian. The most true line from the whole song “We are one.. but we are many.. and from all the lands on earth we come.” Maybe that man in Nichols has really gotten to me!? Besides, I need to be a little patriotic right?!

Is there anything else you want to say, I’m heading out, gotta hit the road again! // So many people laughed at us when we said we were being sent to Louisiana for two years. Especially my Uncle who lives in California! We came here with open minds and were pleasantly surprised with the friendliness of the folk down here and the easygoing laid back lifestyle. Sure, the summer heat is pretty oppressive, but it’s all part of living in the South right?! We’ll no doubt be ready to go home at the end of our time here, but there will be so many things I will miss about the great state of Louisiana – it really is a “different” place. Our second baby is also due in December.  // Congrats!  You are a rockstar for going through a pregnancy in the dog days of summer in the south! I am so glad you were ‘sent’ to Louisiana, or we might not have met, and I am quite glad that we have! My world is bigger and better for it.

TrueBlog!  is all about our life here in Louisiana and all things woolmerhof – in particular, adjusting to life in the South. I like to throw in some recipes and travel stories as well, along with an occasional rambling from myself. Oh, and you can tweet me – @woolmerhof.

I hope you stop by to meet Becc – you will be glad you did!

Becc, I tucked in a little something for you. I left it under the swinging chair on your front lawn. Thank you so much for hosting my most southern stop on my road trip and showing me such great hospitality! Yes, even the mudbugs!

So, as I roll on down the highway, where am I headed next?  Here is your next hint:  it is a state capital. What, that doesn’t narrow it down enough? Ok, this city entered the 20th century with one of the world’s first successful electric streetcar systems.

Thanks for riding along, and until next time, safe travels of all kinds…

Just pulled into Arizona, time for a rest

First Stop – Arizona!

Today is the first stop along my ‘Road Trip” and you all know I was headed for Arizona…I made that easy for you, the next clue won’t be so easy!   I left Northern California and ‘drove’ 755 miles south in my Triumph Herald, all the way down to Phoenix Arizona!  My butt hurts! 🙂   But, it was worth it,  I wanted to meet Kate,  the creative mind behind A Creative Cookie, and I think you will enjoy our meet up! Kate @ A Creative Cookie was among the first folks I connected with when I started my small creative biz on Etsy which in turn is what led me here to this fantastic corner of blogland. I love surprises, and this has got to be one of the best.

At the heart of my summer bloggin’ road trip  is my tribute to the unexpected and the what if:  Unexpected and surprising connections we can and have made as a result taking the risk to put a bit – or a lot – of ourselves out there for others to see, connect with, appreciate, learn from and sometimes just throw our heads back and have a good laugh with.  The what if; what if we could connect beyond our keyboards and computer screens?

So, the way this virtual visit works is  – I asked Kate some  questions I would likely ask her if we were sitting down together at her favorite spot(s) in her hometown,  to get to know each other a little bit better.

Since this is a bloggin’ road trip, we have to talk about blogging, of course. Tell me about when you got started in blogging – What was it that got you started?  Did you think about it for a long time, or did you just wake up one day and think, “I’m going to start a blog”?  // One day I realized my passion for crafting and decided to start a craft blog. I have had several blogs before A Creative Cookie, but none of them got off the ground. I was determined that this one would. The only part that took me a long time was thinking of a name!

How long have you been blogging now, and what would you say has surprised you the most about blogging?  // I’ve been blogging for about nine months now. What’s surprised me most… well really everything has surprised me! Before A Creative Cookie, I thought that “blogging” was more like having a website. I didn’t know it was anything personal, or that I could post about my life sometimes other than just crafts. I also didn’t know that blogging is a great way to meet new friends!  I didn’t realize that either; it’s been such a great surprise to find like minded, kindred spirits – I just didn’t anticipate that part of it, or see it coming, but I am so grateful for having ventured down this road, to find such amazing individuals.

Everything has it’s challenges, are there things about being a blogger that just make you say, ugh?  Things you put off or just like less than the rest of it?  // The biggest challenge I have is to really be me when I write. After lots of thinking and reading a few posts, including this one , I’ve realized how the whole concept of “blog etiquette” is ridiculous. Leaving comments and making friends through blogging isn’t wrong at all, but I personally have found that reading other blogs, saying just the right things, and being witty and funny during posts… has all changed me and they way I write. I’m determined to make my posts as if I was really talking, not just me trying to be funny or interesting.  Commenting is the way we engage, connect and form relationships here, and don’t you think that’s also how we even find out partly who we are, by our own reactions to what others share?  I am glad we have some of that same perspective!

What topic/topics do you enjoy blogging about the most?  // I love blogging about craft tutorials, of course, but I also love sharing helpful tips. Giveaways are fun to host too!

I just rolled into your town…how are we going to spend the day?  // The Botanical Gardens  This is my favorite place to practice my photography! All the cacti, plants, flowers, and butterflies are just gorgeous! Of course you’d have to come during Spring for the best experience.

Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium  The zoo is such a fun place to go! The Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium also has a fun log ride  to go on. I am also a huge fan of photographing animals, so this is also a fantastic place to go to! The Lowell Observatory If you would like to stay an extra day, we could drive up to The Lowell Observatory. They have a fun, interesting tour around the place that includes a visit to the Pluto Discovery Telescope. Salt River Tubing We could go on a fun 2 hour tubing ride down the river. Unwind with a floating cooler full of snacks and drinks but don’t forget sunscreen! Scottsdale Civic Center Mall This is a beautiful place with flowers, fountains, and sculptures. We could take a walk, feed the swans, and take lots of photos.

I just spent 755 miles in the car and want to unwind with a nice glass of wine – what do you say we go grab a drink? Where do you take me and what’s your favorite summer time beverage?   //  It’s funny – I’ve never gone out to get a drink! To try new things, I would take you to Hobs NobsI drive by them all the time and just love the look of the cute little place! My favorite summer time beverage would be lemonade… I’m not a huge drinker and don’t drink soda anymore.  That looks like a great spot! I love a nice glass of wine, and I don’t drink soda anymore either, (I managed to kick that habit about  a year ago ), and I love lemonade {is there anyone who doesn’t} so we’re good!

What question(s) do you have for me while we relax?  // Which of the five places we “went to” above did you enjoy {or think you would enjoy} the most?   I would completely love the Salt River Tubing and any and all of the locations you scouted for some great photography. I always have a camera with me and love any opportunity to take photos. Especially in areas where it is just part of life. My husband grew up in Arizona, and he and I are going to have a long chat…he’s never taken me tubing, or to any of these incredible places.

So, I’m pretty hungry after a day of driving and I’ve had my fill of fast food and truck stop food. I  would loooove something home cooked ; what would you fix for us to eat? // I would love to fix some of this delicious lookin’ ravioli, with parmesan cheesy bread my mom used to make. And how about some homemade hot fudge sundaes for dessert? 🙂  Duh! Ok…sure, um yeah, that would be great!

You had me at cheesy bread, by the way, and do you think I’d say no to dessert?  But before I get back on the road, I’m going to need a good cuppa cuppa to keep me awake for the next part of my drive….where would you take me for my java fix?   // I would take you to Donut Central, a cute donut and coffee place near my house. Sadly, I couldn’t find a website, but they have the yummiest donuts that we can munch on while sipping our coffee. Oh! And I can’t forget that they have the nicest staff.  That always keeps me coming back to a place too, kindness goes a long way and remains in my memory longer than any taste or flavor.

Tell me one surprising thing I would find out when meeting you for the first time?  // You would find that I have really long hair! I used to always wear it shoulder-length, but I love the longer look now. Putting it in messy buns is my favorite!  Mine used to be really long too, until I cut it all of at the big four-oh birthday, so I could donate it, and it’s been short ever since.

It’s been an awesome stop – I want to take a souvenir home to remember my visit with you  – what should I put in my trunk to take home?  // You should grab a cute pair of sunglasses to remember the intense sun here! Oh, and snap lots of photos! Those capture the best memories.

I’m heading out of the driveway – you toss me a CD  of your favorite tunes to listen to as I roll on down the highway – what is it and what’s your favorite song on it? I might just have to hand you two CDs!  Because I absolutely loooove musicals, I would toss you Wicked, a fun musical about how The Wizard of Oz came to be, and Les Miserables. Both are a family favorite here! My favorite songs are Defying Gravity and One Day More.  I am a fan of Les Miserables, and have enjoyed seeing it more than once. I wish I could say the same about Wicked, but it’s on my list to see now. Especially after listening to Kristen Chenowith and Idina Menzel sing Defying Gravity {embedding was disabled} I couldn’t stop listening to this song…and found myself really connecting with these lyrics:

Something has changed within me  — Something is not the same  — I’m through with playing by the rules  —  Of someone else’s game  — Too late for second-guessing  — Too late to go back to sleep  — It’s time to trust my instincts  — Close my eyes: and leap!  If you have seen Wicked, I am envious!

Is there anything else you want to say, I’m heading out!

Yes… thank you so much for visiting me! It’s been so much fun!

Kate, it’s been fun to get to know you a little better and thank you so much for being a warm welcome when I first came on the scene and for hosting my first  ‘stop’ in Arizona …I hardly noticed your 107 degree heat!

🙂

A Creative Cookie blog

My mom taught me to return kindness with kindess, so Kate, you get a little token of appreciation from me – I hope you enjoy it!

So, as I roll on down the highway, where am I headed next?  Here is your hint; and I’ m being nice and giving you two clues:

My next stop is in a state bordered by six states and has the most (hu)man made lakes in the US.

???

Until next time, safe travels of all kinds…
