Time travel

After pondering the rings I wear and the lives of my mother and grandmother, I couldn’t stop thinking about life in a different time. My mother was born in 1924 and my grandmother in 1904. They both lived through wars, post-wars, the depression era, and my grandmother was only 8 at the time of the Titanic’s epic tragedy.  I wish I had talked to her about that when she was alive. I found myself wanting to get a glimpse into what life was like a hundred years ago. I found some fun facts that put a few thigs into perspective…and learned a bit of history at the same time..enjoy this little jaunt back in time:

  • January 1  :: 1st running of San Francisco’s famed “Bay to Breakers” race, 7.63 miles / 12.3 km
  • February 14 :: Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th state
  • March 1 :: Isabella Goodwin, 1st U.S. woman detective, appointed, New York City
  • April 9 ::  Titanic leaves Queenstown, Ireland for New York; sinks April 15
  • May 1 :: Beverly Hills Hotel opens
  •  June 13 :: Albert Berry made the 1st parachute jump from an airplane
  • July 1st :: Sally Kirkland, American fashion editor is born(d. 1989)
  • August 15th :: Julia Child, Pasadena California, chef (French Chef) is born
  • September 25th ::  Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is founded in New York, New York.
  • October 25th ::  Minnie Pearl, [Sarah Ophelia Colley], is born.
  • November 5 :: Arizona, Kansas and Wisconsin vote for female suffrage
  • December 16 :: 1st U.S. postage stamp picturing an airplane, 20 cent parcel post, issued

    • I know, right?! The amount of change they witnessed and experienced is amazing. It just got to me how two items I own have ‘traveled’ through all those times. Nothing like a little nostalgia!
