Home and On The Range

Hello travelers and happiest of Mondays, though I do fully realize the oxymoron of that statement!

This last stop on our road trip travels was all about home. Oh, no, The Kiddo and I are not done with our travels, not even close…but the last stop took us to my hometown for the weekend.

A familiar landmark near my hometown

I took the old country roads I know like the back of my hand from the beach to my family home. I have to say, it was more than a little surreal to listen to music, with the current associations of today, while driving the roads filled with memories stacked up since my earliest driving days.

It was time for my brother and son to reconnect, and time for my little man to visit with my old man. And, we shared an afternoon and evening with the grown up kids from my days of childhood in a home more magical than any I’ve visited since. We shared stories of today; travels, tales of parenthood and ailing parents. We laughed until our bellies ached over stories about our parents’ shenanigans, wondering how there are still stories we haven’t all heard at this point in time. We drank Manhattan’s and Port. We were comforted, at least I was, simply by being in each others presence; knowing that this is a safe place of belonging. We all go way back, to the very beginning.

Earlier that day, my son and I shared a unique experience together that neither of us will forget. The world, and opinions are way too complicated for me to share photos here (but I have some awesome pictures!) of our morning out in a countryside vineyard where we both learned how to handle, respect and shoot a rifle. It was a rite of passage for the both of us; just in different ways. And, to see my son and brother bond is priceless. And apparently, I’m a natural. Be afraid…very afraid! 🙂

Before leaving, and heading to our next destination, I managed to get…

Dad-ism #4!
Me: Dad, what do you most regret NOT doing in your life?

…long pause…

Dad: Not being more friendly,  more kind.

I was stunned after that. I just nodded and thanked my dad for his answer. He’s so right. It reminded me, immediately, of the piece recently shared online – the commencement speaker who most regrets his failures of kindness. My dad, he’s a smart cookie.

Before we headed out, The Kiddo asked his Granddad to show him his Colonel uniform from his Army days, and with my brothers help, we got to see and touch and feel this incredible piece of history.

I loved our family stop; and it was hard to leave. Each place has that in common. After that,  we hit the road, turned up the volume and opened some candy for the next leg. Oh, the cherry sours? History. Thing of the past. GONE. (sigh)

And now, time for your thinkin’ and Googling hats…

  1. I’m not googling…but I’m jumping on Rick’s wagon…Castroville. And did you throw ‘D’ in there to try to catch one of is ARTOVILLE a real place? Told ya, not googling. 🙂 This trip is getting betterer and betterer everyday. So enjoyed the family visit, sounds perfectly wonderful. I’ve never had an Artichoke in the ‘raw’ but have had Artichoke dip. Does that count? And thanks to your pal Liz…Parkville for the Earthquake capital? Population 18 she says…I’m surprised it’s that many!! 🙂

    • Hahaha…you caught me! Yes, I totally threw in Artoville! Too much fun. Artoville exists only in my mind! Artichoke dip..hmmm? Should that count? Well, I suppose, if you promise me that someday you WILL try an actual artichoke. Deal?

Are you sure that my pal Liz was right about Parkville being the Earthquake capital???

🙂 Trip was just nothing short of awesome…trying now to re-adjust to reality. It’s not working so well. 😉

  2. am back from my own vacation and am on a wordpress rampage here, trying to catch up 🙂 I see that no one is shouting it out, so I’ll just go ahead and say it: Parkfield (population 18? holy cow!)

Also, Castroville and I know that because I do indeed enjoy artichokes. You talk so beautifully about your father (loved your question to him, his answer, and also that your son could spend time with him and see that uniform–wowza) and I’ll share here that my experience with artichokes started with my dad. My mom would steam an artichoke with a side of lemon butter for us each Saturday when we watched the Sonny and Cher Show (I was only 4 or so, give me a break 😉 ) and I always think of him when I buy one and prepare it. Am trying to pass this tradition (minus the cheesy tv variety show) down to my girls, but they want nothing to do with artichokes. (though they’ll happily drink down the lemon butter)

And I’ll mind myself when you’re around for sure, now that I know you’re handy with a piece 😉

    • Hi Liz!! Where did you go on vacation? Did you have fun? I tried to keep up with blogs while I was on the road, with some mild success, but also playing catch up. thanks for stopping in on your whirlwind catch up tour!

I am so glad you love artichokes! they are such a part of my growing up. living within 30 min of Castroville, we ate them all the time. But, we ate them with mayonnaise, not the lemon butter, though I think I need to try that soon!! And Sonny & Cher..wow, a memory from the past! I hope you get the girls to like artichokes, but with a 9yr old..I get it!

And yes, mind yourself, love that!! 🙂

  3. I should excuse myself from answered the Earthquake Capital (of the World – we used to say) since it’s also my hometown…I grew up 5 blocks from Bon-Bon. But I can’t keep out of the artichoke question since it’s nothing like broccolini and definitely it’s certainly not Barstow, you sillies. But rather CASTROVILLE. I’ve got proof I’ve eaten there many-a-time if you want to give me 1 point per photo. Happy travels and I leave you with The Little Rascals quote, “It might choke Arti but it’s not gonna choke Steimey.”

    • But is it our hometown, OR the little town just down the road, the one with the mission? Hmmmm??? Points awarded however, for playing, the quote and setting everyone straight on the artichoke capital! 🙂

  4. Is broccoli similar to an artichoke….Cause if so ….then yes! 🙂 I’ve only had the dip. And I’m kinda with Mimi on this answering thing….. So I googled it and I know the answer….and it’s not Barstow, guys! Change your answers…quick!

The visit kiddo had with your bubba and dad are awesome. I always knew you had some Annie Oakley in you. 🙂 The uniform brought tears to my eyes. Made me wanna go “home” and find my dad’s, too. ♥

Great advice….be kind. There’s just not enough of that in this world. Happy travels & hugs ♥

    • You crack me up and glad you consulted our friend google..I like the competitive spirit!

My brother, and the guy who taught us, called me Annie Oakley too..so fun!

I hope you can find your dad’s uniform – I had seen it over the years, but it’s been years. To feel the texture of the fabric, and know that it’s been nearly 70 years now..quite something. And to see it with my kiddo, well, added layers of something we shall always remember.

  7. For some reason, I think it’s Barstow, Bon, but not sure, and that’s bad, ’cause I LOVE artichokes! And I love your dad, though I’ve never met him. Sounds like an absolute gem, and a very wise man…..

    • My dad is wise and so full of experiences, I wish I could capture it all, and grateful for the ability and opportunity to write about him, for I think i see him even more clearly this way. Hmmm? Barstow… 🙂 We shall soon see, but I LOVE that all the way on the east coast, you love artichokes! xo
